TRAINING
REQUIREMENTS
The following annual
training courses are mandatory for all active members.
FF SAFETY COURSE -
This course is part of the mandated eight hour OSHA refresher. Topics
covered are fire station safety, fire scene safety, personal protective
clothing, tool and equipment safety and new innovation review.
EMERGENCY VEHICLE
OPERATORS COURSE (EVOC) - This
course is another part of the mandated eight hour OSHA refresher. We have
based this course on the Utica National EVOC and the NY OFPC courses and
incorporated SHC standard operating procedures. This is also a
prerequisite for apparatus driver / operator qualifications.
SCBA REFRESHER
- This course is also part of the OSHA eight hour refresher. Based on OSHA
1910.134 this course covers wearer physical & mental requirements, donning,
doffing, components, maintenance and inspection of Scott 4.5 SCBA's.
HAZARDOUS
COMMUNICATIONS - In
compliance with OSHA 1910.120 this course covers the Right to Know law and
hazardous material identification.
BLOOD BORNE
PATHOGENS - Infectious
disease awareness is required under OSHA 1910.1030 This course covers
types of infectious diseases, routes of entry and personal protective equipment
that is available to all SHC members.
HAZ MAT
OPERATIONS REF - All
SHC Class A & B firefighters are required to be trained to the Operations
level for hazardous materials. This course reviews placards, DOT response
guide book and operations that can be conducted by SHC.
The following annual
requirements are mandatory for all SHC Class A (SCBA) firefighters.
PREREQUISITE
- Prior to becoming a
Class A firefighter all members must be trained to the NYState
Intermediate or Firefighter
I level and also
have completed the NYState FF
Survival Course.
MEDICAL
EVALUATION - In
compliance with our Respiratory Protection Program under the requirements of
OSHA 1910.134 all firefighters wearing SCBA's will be medically cleared by a licensed
physician.
MASK FIT TESTING
- Also in compliance with our RPP all firefighters wearing SCBA must be fit
tested on an annual basis.
LIVE FIRE
TRAINING - All SHC Class
A firefighters are required to attend a live fire training session on an annual
basis.
SURVIVAL
REFRESHER - All SHC Class
A firefighters are also required to complete a firefighter Survival
refresher. Survival skills are reviewed and members are evaluated on each
technique.
