Schuyler Hose provides a wide variety of training for its members throughout the year.  Generally training is conducted on Thursday nights with additional training conducted on weekends.

Principles of Building Construction: Noncombustible
Chief's Brian Myers and Tom Benton completed the 12 hour PBC course hosted by Wilton F.D.  The course introduces special characteristics of noncombustible and fire resistive construction as they concern the fire service. Primary emphasis is on improving the fire officer's ability to ensure firefighter safety by recognizing common causes and indicators of failure and other hazards related to building construction. Course material enables the fire officer to better predict the overall reaction of a building to fire conditions.  The course was instructed by SFI Peter Shaw.

MAY

Introduction to Fire Officer I
On May 4, 2009 Capt. Edward Carr successfully completed the 27 hour New York State Introduction to Fire Officer course hosted by the Middle Grove Fire Department and instructed by SFI Pete Shaw.  The IFO Course is the first in a new series addressing command and management in today's fire service. The goal is to give new and prospective officers the skills necessary to effectively manage and lead their companies and departments in the challenges of the rapidly changing fire service. Topics include assuming the role of company officer, introduction to leadership and management, fire service organization, legal issues facing the fire service, communications, health and safety, incident management, emergency response, on scene management and communications, and strategy/tactics for single company operations.

Utica National EVOC
SHC hosted the Utica National EVOC on Saturday September 19 and Sunday September 20.  The course consisted of all day classroom session on Saturday and hands on driving skills on Sunday.  The instructor was Robert Faugh.  SHC members completing the course include:  Safety Officer Richard Behrens, Lt. Adam Myers, FF's Dan Buell, Whitney Colvin and George Graham.  Thanks to Dave Meager of Adirondack Trust Insurance for making all of the arrangements for this course.

NYS Truck Company Operations
Lt. Adam Myers successfully completed the 24 hour NYS Truck Company Operations Course on September 29, 2009.  This course provides instruction for using ladder company equipment including operating ground ladders. Includes duties and responsibilities of the ladder company, operating and maintaining specialized tools, ventilation, forcible entry, search, and building construction.  The class was hosted by Mechanicville Fire Department and instructed by SFI Brian Myers, Jr.

NYS Apparatus Operator - Pump
FF Ray Carr successfully completed the 24 hour NYS Apparatus Operator - Pump course.  The course offers knowledge and skills essential to pump operation. Based on objectives from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator, Chapter 3, this course includes responsibilities of pump operators, hydraulics and friction loss, pump controls and accessories, fire streams, pumper practices, pumping from draft and pump evolutions, and using the fire pump at the fire hydrant. Demonstrations and practice sessions are included.  The course was hosted by Eagle Matt Lee Fire Company of Ballston Span and instructed by SFI Peter Shaw.

 

NOVEMBER

NYS Firefighter II
Asst. Chief Tom Benton and FF Mike Zehl recently completed the 27 hour NYS Firefighter II course.  This course is designed as the last step in initial level training for interior structural firefighters and/or who will serve as team or group leaders under the general supervision of an officer. Builds on Basic and Intermediate Firefighter Courses and introduces new more advanced areas that will be expanded in other training programs. With the exception of those NFPA Firefighter Level II objectives pertaining to Vehicle Extrication techniques, a firefighter receives the training components equivalent to those found within NFPA Firefighter II Standard after they have successfully completed the Advanced Firefighter Training Courses.  Firefighter II is based on objectives from NFPA Standard 1001, Firefighter Level II, and consists of performance criteria in: incident command implementation, building materials and collapse, special rescue, hydrant flow and operability, hose tools, foam operations, flammable liquid/gases, detection, alarm systems, fire cause and origin, fire department communications, pre-fire planning, special situations, strategy and tactics.  The course was hosted by the Stillwater Fire Department and instructed by SFI Joseph Champagne.
