Hose Teaches Fire Safety Lessons
Schuyler
Hose Company firefighters provided fire and summer safety lessons
to two groups of Schuylerville Central School students as part of
the ongoing Community Safety Program.
On
June 19th, Ms. Hagglove's high school class toured SHC to learn
about the services provided by the fire company and see the
various fire apparatus. Past Chief Ray Zerwick and Asst.
Chief Richard Drew explained about the procedures from when an
emergency call is received by Saratoga County fire dispatchers and
relayed to SHC along with the uses of the various fire apparatus
housed in the station and ready to respond in the case of
emergency. With the assistance of firefighters Matt Derway
and Matt Varner, Asst. Chief Drew continued the discussion of the
readiness of firefighters and what protective gear they must wear
while operating at an emergency scene . Safety Officer
Richard Behrens then taught a lesson about how to be safe during
summer activities of swimming, boating, biking and skate boarding,
enjoying camp fires and riding in vehicles. Firefighter
Frank Merrill then taught a lesson about how to safely get out of
a house on fire and about how fires are put out.
On
June 20th Asst. Chief Drew along with firefighters Colton Barber,
Matt Derway, Frank Merrill and Matt Varner went to Schuylerville
Elementary School to provide similar lessons to four of the Grade
Five classes. The lessons included firefighter turnout gear
and their uses, exit drills in the home, safe summer activities
and the science involved in fighting fires. Over 100
students participated in all of the lessons presented.
Schuyler
Hose looks forward to sharing many more safety lessons with all of
the students at Schuylerville Elementary School in the fall of the
2008-2009 school year.
