April 28th - Schuyler Hose responded to a vehicle fire
behind a residence on Rugg Rd. in the Town of
Northumberland. Car 57, Chief Myers, arrived and reported a
well involved truck on fire with no exposures and a small grass
fire. Upon arrival of ER-573 the engine crew stretched an
attack line and extinguished the fire. Additional hose had
to be added to the line due to the distance (about 100 yds) behind
the residence. The operator of the Jeep was stuck in a marsh
and the hot catalytic converter caught the high grass on fire and
then the vehicle caught on fire.

Mutual
Aid Structure Fire in Greenwich
January 21st - At 20:51 SHC was dispatched for a mutual
aid FAST assignment to a working structure fire on Rabbit Rd. in
the Town of Greenwich. Car 57 and ER-573 responded to the

had attack lines stretched into the building and were knocking
down the attic fire. ER-573 set up FAST staging on the A-B
corner of the fire building. The fire was quickly
extinguished and SHC stood by for the start of an extensive
overhaul. The fire had originated in the chimney and spread
to the attic. Truck work was required to snuff out any
hidden fire in the walls, 2in2out was established and the SHC FAST
crew assisted with overhaul tasks.

throughout the morning as multiple companies worked on the
original fire structure and adjoining structure. T-577 set
up on Side C and conducted both ventilation and master stream
operations throughout the incident. ETA-571 extended a
supply line established by a Greenwich engine an additional 400'
to a hydrant on John St. and supplied a secondary source of water
to the scene. Victory Mills and Gansevoort FD's both
relocated an engine to the SHC station for coverage. During
the incident SHC with assistance from our cover companies
responded to three additional alarms in the SHC district.
All SHC units remained on scene until 11:40. SHC returned to
full service at 14:00 with the exception of T-577, which remained

January
Ice Storm
January 15th & 16th - An ice storm hit the region
starting on Monday morning. At 10:30 SHC was dispatched to
assist Victory Mills with an incident on Schuyler Heights Dr.,
this would be the start of a series of alarm responses that would
put SHC to the test. In the span of twelve hours the company
responded to twenty-four responses. Several roads and
streets had to be shut down including a block of Broad St. due to
trees and wires being down. At 23:00 all firefighters were
released from duty, with the exception of a few members sleeping
in quarters. Tuesday's runs started at 03:20 and cleared up
around 19:00 with a total of fourteen responses. Over the
two day period the company responded to a total of 38 alarms which
included; several trees/power lines down, a furnace fire, pump
outs and elderly residential welfare checks. The village and
surrounding area were also out of power for approximately
two-three days. During this two day stretch SHC handled all
of the alarms without mutual aid assistance.

Hay Bale Fire Goes
to 2nd Alarm
January 11th - At 11:48 SHC was dispatched to a grass
fire at the King's Ransom Farm on King Rd. in the Town of
Northumberland. Car 57, Chief Myers, arrived on scene at
11:53 and found several large bales of hay on fire with the fire
extending to a plastic tarp and tires covering a silage pit.
F-575 was first due and upon arrival stretched a forestry line to
knock down the fire spreading to the cover and tires. TA-574
supplied water and ER-573 established attack lines to knock down
the burning hay bales. Additional water would be needed and
Chief Myers requested a 2nd alarm assignment for Box 30 which
included; Gansevoort & Quaker Springs for one tanker, Victory
Mills to establish a tanker fill site at Winney's Pond and
Greenwich to cover SHC station. During the operations a pay
loader owned by the farm was being used (by farm personnel) to
spread out the burning hay. The loader's engine sucked in
some burning hay and stalled out, resulting in an engine fire that
was quickly extinguished. SHC returned to full service at
16:00 with no reported injuries.
