Brian D. Myers, Sr. Remembrance
Members of Schuyler Hose Company held a memorial breakfast to honor the memory of Brian D. Myers, Sr. ten years after his line of duty death on
January 1, 1997. Firefighter Myers died of injuries sustained while conducting interior firefighting operations at a local restaurant fire. The
breakfast followed a Mass dedicated to him at the Notre Dame - Visitation Church in Schuylerville.
Attending the breakfast were in excess of fifty Schuyler Hose Company firemen and their family members, the Myers family, local dignitaries, as
well as representatives from the local fire companies and emergency squad which stepped in to assist Schuyler Hose during and after the fire. Also
attending were members of MacBoston 18 Truck, a group of area firefighters who formed to
honor those firefighters who have made the supreme sacrifice for their communities. Jerry Herbst, from the
group spoke at Mass about the contribution that firefighters make at every emergency that they respond to.
During the breakfast, held at Old Saratoga American Legion Post # 278, there was a power point presentation of pictures of "Senior" showing him at
home with his family as well as at his second home, the fire house. The presentation was arranged by his son, Chief Brian D. Myers, Jr.. Master of
Ceremonies, Richard Behrens, led all in a memorial tribute to Brian. The celebration including the presentation of floral arrangements by Schuyler
Hose president, Joseph Turcotte and members of the Schuyler Hose Auxiliary to Brian's widow, Ronalee and their three sons, Brian, Jr., Adam, and
Philip. Other members of "Senior's" family were gifted with table
center pieces arranged in Schuyler Hose commemorative mugs.
Schuyler Hose Company will continue to honor the dedication and sacrifice of Brian D. Myers, Sr. as an example of the level of service we all strive to
contribute.

It’s fitting 18 Truck is a part of this celebration.
Fitting because it celebrates our cause. Brian fulfilled a
destiny. Our purpose is to ensure his, and all other Firefighters
sacrifices are never forgotten.
We Know! We are Firefighters, we know the risks taken, we know the
only thing that sensationalizes events for the general public is
outcomes. A rescue, a tragic death, a serious injury. We also know
that everyday, somewhere those risks are taken, time and time
again, with no notoriety, no less risk but no headline. Most times
it’s just “getting it done”. No fanfare, just clean it up,
put it in service and get ready for the next one. That’s the
job.
FF. Brian Myers died in pursuit of helping his fellow man, he died
doing the job. His day, his fire, was a headline because of the
outcome.
I think we need to honor his day. But also, let us honor his
career. All the other calls, the ones that were headlines for him
personally. The good stops, the difficult extrications, the public
relations details. I would like to think those events defined
Brian as a Fireman.
Let’s honor Brian not just for the way he died, but for how he
lived his life, for he lived it in a noble way. He lived it as a
Firefighter.
On behalf of 18 Truck I thank you.
Rest
in peace brother and know your deeds will never be forgotten.
